Over-topped seawall
This damaged seawall shows how the clay is scoured out from the rear face as a high tide over-tops the wall... it is the increased speed of the water running down the rear slope that does the damage, and can quickly eat through the whole wall, creating a full blown breach.

Sheep Grazing Essex Seawall
Seawalls have to be managed, and sheep grazing has been found to be ideal in regards to grass height and best surface consolidation without damage... unlike too much human traffic in wet weather where the surface can become muddy, bare, water-logged and therefore weak and susceptible to scour if overtopped.
